Specialties & Services

Comprehensive Eye Exams
Please allow 1 1/2 to 2 hours for this medical eye exam which includes our Certified Ophthalmic Assistants screening, examination for glasses, and dilation (enlargement of the pupils) to enable Dr. Nunn to see fully the back of the eye. This will enable Dr. Nunn to examine the optic nerve (disc), blood vessels, macula, retina and cornea, iris and lens to ensure that they are healthy. We also screen for Glaucoma and Cataracts.

Dilating drops typically cause temporary blurring of vision (especially for reading) and sensitivity to bright light which may make driving uncomfortable. Pupils usually return to normal within 3 to 5 hours, or as long as 6 to 8 hours. We will provide you with sunglasses that will help with glare. Please make arrangements for transportation if necessary.

Cataract Surgery
A cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye. Normally, light passes through the lens and is focused on the retina. However, as a result of the natural aging process the lens gradually becomes cloudy blocking the passage of light and causes blurred vision. Dr. Nunn performs out-patient No-Stitch/Small Incision surgery. Typical benefits of No-Stitch/Small Incision surgery include: faster recovery of good vision, quicker return to normal activities, good vision in a matter of days, and return home within hours of the procedure! (Your Mileage May Vary)

LASER Surgery
Yag LASER Capsulotomy - an out-patient LASER treatment that is often necessary after a successful cataract surgery, to restore clear vision and reduce glare when the human lens capsule, just behind the artificial lens implant, gradually clouds.

Yag LASER Iridotomy - a LASER treatment sometimes necessary for Narrow or Angle Closure Glaucoma.

Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment
Glaucoma is a serious disease, but in most cases it can be controlled. Glaucoma is a multi-factorial disease of the optic nerve where there is characteristic acquired loss of the retinal nerve fiber layer and progressive atrophy of the optic nerve. Increased intra-ocular pressure (IOP) inside the eye is a risk factor for visual loss. If undetected, glaucoma can lead to loss of vision. There are different kinds of glaucoma including: Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (most common), Angle Closure Glaucoma, Narrow Angle Glaucoma, Secondary Glaucoma, etc. People who are at high risk for glaucoma include those with a family history of glaucoma, African Americans, Hispanics, older than 60 years, and those with less than average corneal thickness and increased IOP. Contact us today with any questions or if you think you need to be examined for possible glaucoma.

Diabetic Eye Exams
Before scheduling your Initial or Subsequent Comprehensive Medical Eye Exam, we request you provide us with the value and date of the most recent HbA1c, glyco-hemoglobin test result. Depending on how well you control your diabetes, your prudent personal physician will usually order this lab test 2-4 times yearly. The HbA1c reveals the Blood Glucose level, averaging the peaks and valleys over the past 2-4 months, depending on the life of your Red Blood Cells, to which the "sugar" is attached. While the HbA1c does not aid in Insulin or Oral HypoGlycemic tablet dosing, it does tell Dr. Nunn just how well you control your diabetes, and if you, with your Diabetes Management Team's help, will need to achieve tighter glucose control. With TIGHT control, one can increase lifespan and lower the risk of kidney and eye-sight complications by an astonishing 60% to 70%!! The desired HbA1c level is 6.5% or less. If your blood sugar is consistently under 110 mg/dl before meals and no higher than 140 mg/dl after meals, that will usually translate to HbA1c levels of 6.5% or less.

Our goal is to help you protect your eyes and preserve your vision and enhance the quality and duration of your life. Your role is to keep your diabetes under TIGHT control, learn about your eyes, find out how diabetes can threaten your eyesight, get medical eye exams regularly, and follow your Personal Physician's and Eye MD's treatment plan.
